I will away be on holiday from 3rd to 13th April and will not be posting over this period. I also won’t be checking emails or phone calls (a colleague will screen my calls for anything urgent - but I don’t expect anything). Here is the view from my hotel room in the spirit of sharing
In 14 years of running my own business, with colleagues and clients around the world I think I have only once taken a business call on holiday. Family time can be scarce for people with busy careers and many large companies are very demanding of our time, but you can take control of your time, set ground rules and stick to them. If you don’t you can’t expect anyone else to do it for you.
I am sure I will hear many urgent calls made and received by my neighbours on the sunbeds next week. Some of them sound so trivial I cannot believe they have interrupted their holiday, for othersĀ I wonder if they have heard of delegation?
Have a good week and if your colleagues are on holiday - leave them alone.

Kevan nice blog topic but you are so evil posting that picture we are looking at while at work!
I just came back from the Dominican and i didnt take my phone/blackberry with me for the first time (previous holidays have been ruined because if mails or calls come in I just can’t help myself!)
This time was strange but i liked it, i knew things would be happening but didnt know what, and once i got my head around the fact that even if the worst possible thing imaginable had happened (like the lights not working in reception or something) then they just had to get on with it. And if my phone was getting lonely without me then it needed to get a life and find something to do or just rest!
We had a fantastic break and I spent loads of time with the kids. I’m lucky as my manager insists in not bothering people on vacation and not allowing people to travel during family time (weekends/Bank holidays etc), sometimes we can put unforced pressure on ourselves.
My phone is not coming with me ever again (apparently it had a great time without me too).

Thanks John, glad your phone enjoyed the break!
I had a good holiday too with the expected opportunity to overhear mobile calls.
I particualrly enjoy people who walk away from their own families so as not to disturb them and then come and stand near me.
Amazingly there were no emergencies whilst I was away and less than 5% of my emails required any action after 10 days,
